Middle Smithfield Township has established its own matching grant program to foster $750,000 of property improvements along its six-mile stretch of Milford Road, aka Route 209.
The grant will fund projects that are visible from 209 to improve building facades, curb appeal, and safety; project size is up to $20,000 in cost, with the Revitalize 209 grant and the applicant each providing $10,000 to fund the project. (more details can be found on the township’s website). The township’s portion of the total funds ($375,000) was made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act.
An ad hoc “Revitalize 209 Committee” will be formed to administer the grant and advise the Board of Supervisors, and is envisioned to be comprised of members of the township’s Planning Commission, HOstorical Commission, and Economic Development Committee, as well as members of the public.
This latest Economic Development concept was presented by James Brechbiel, Economic Development Manager, at the Township’s “Preview of 2023” presentation to the public in February “We anticipate stimulating economic development in our township with this grant program.” he said.
"The 209 Revitalization Grant Program offers business owners the opportunity to promote the time honored proven practice -- An inviting appearance also invites customers" said Joe Memoli, Chairperson, Middle Smithfiled Township Economic Development Committee.
At the Board of Supervisors’ March 23rd meeting, both the “Revitalize 209” grant program and the “Revitalize 209 Advisory Committee” were both established by resolution. (Resolutions can be viewed on the township’s website; Grant Applications will be made available once the members of the Revitalize 209 Committee are in place.)
“We look forward to seeing these improvements blossom and grow along our Mainstreet; as projects are proposed and implemented, the effort will pick up momentum. Each upgrade will add to our pride in the community”, said Annette Atkinson, Township Supervisor.
